Biker Slang: Decoding the Language of Motorcycle Enthusiasts

March 20, 2023 By Alen Schnell

The motorcycle community is rich with its own unique culture, traditions, and language. Biker slang is a colorful and expressive way for riders to communicate with one another and express their shared passion for the open road.

Let’s explore some common biker slang terms and phrases to help you better understand and immerse yourself in the world of motorcycle enthusiasts.

Ape Hangers

Ape hangers are high handlebars that force the rider’s hands to be at or above shoulder level. They’re named for the way riders look when using them, resembling an ape hanging from a tree branch. These handlebars are often found on choppers and custom bikes.

Brain Bucket

A brain bucket is a slang term for a minimalistic helmet, often a half-helmet, that provides basic head protection. While not as safe as full-face helmets, they remain popular among some riders for their style and comfort.

Cage

A cage refers to any four-wheeled vehicle, typically a car or truck. Bikers often use this term to differentiate between motorcycles and other vehicles on the road. They may also refer to drivers of these other vehicles as cagers.

Countersteering

Countersteering is a technique used by riders to initiate a turn by momentarily steering the handlebars in the opposite direction of the desired turn. It might seem counterintuitive, but it’s an essential skill for safe and effective motorcycle riding.

Iron Butt

An iron butt refers to a long-distance motorcycle rider who can endure extended periods of riding without becoming fatigued or sore. The term is often used with respect and admiration for a rider’s endurance.

Lane Splitting

Lane splitting is the act of riding a motorcycle between lanes of slow-moving or stopped traffic. While it’s legal in some regions and can be an efficient way to navigate congestion, it remains a controversial practice.

Patch

A patch is an embroidered emblem or symbol representing a motorcycle club or organization. Patches are often worn on vests or jackets and can signify membership, rank, or accomplishments within the group.

Rubber Side Down

Rubber side down is a colloquial way of wishing a fellow rider a safe journey. It’s a reminder to keep the tires on the road and maintain control of the motorcycle.

Squid

A squid is a derogatory term for an inexperienced or reckless motorcycle rider, often one who disregards safety gear and proper riding techniques. The term is believed to have originated from the acronym “Squirming Under Inexperienced Direction.”

Twisties

Twisties are sections of curvy, winding roads that are particularly enjoyable for motorcycle riders. These stretches of the road allow bikers to test their skills and enjoy the thrill of leaning into turns.
