It’s a great way to meet up with like-minded people and compare your bikes, exchange knowledge, swap parts, and talk about your favorite routes to ride your bike on. A lot of towns already have motorcycle clubs, but if yours doesn’t, you could be the official motorcycle ambassador for your city.

How to Start a Motorcycle Club In Your Area: 10 Tips

Before you start recruiting members for your motorcycle club, you’ve got to do your due diligence. You don’t want to infringe on an existing club’s membership, so do a little bit of research about other clubs that might be in your area. 

If there are other dominant motorcycle clubs in your area, you should contact them to talk about what their club represents and why you’re interested in forming your club. The last thing you want to do is invite some sort of competition between an established club and your new club.

Motorcycle clubs are usually protective of their location. However, if you’re outside of their radius and give them a good reason why you want to start a new club, they’ll usually allow it.

Once you’ve gotten the go-ahead from the established clubs in the area, you can get started with the creation of yours.

1. Know What Type of Club You’re Starting

There are two main types of motorcycle-centric clubs: riding clubs and motorcycle clubs. A riding club is a group of people that get together every once in a while to socialize for a bit then take a ride on their bikes. 

It might center around a specific brand like Harley Davidson, Triumph, or Honda, but they’re usually pretty lax about who can join. This is more suited for people that want a casual meetup so you don’t need to put too much planning into a riding club.

A motorcycle club is a little bit more immersive. These are the ones where you see a group of people wearing vests with the club’s name and location. Being more serious, this is the type of club that would be protective of its location, so you’ll need to talk to other clubs in your area before starting your own.

When you start a motorcycle club, you’ll register underneath the blanket organization known as Confederation of Clubs. The COC acts as the liaison between different clubs and chapters.

2. Do Some Research

If there are other motorcycle clubs in your town, you’ll want to do some research before starting your own. You don’t want your mission statement to overlap another organization’s, so learn everything you need to to create a unique club.

Maintaining a peaceful motorcycle club environment is all about being respectful to those that were there before you. If you can do that, then you’ll never have any issues with any of the other COC organizations and you can go about your business privately. 

While you’re researching, start outlining what you want your club to be about, the areas you’ll want to operate in or support, and the types of people you want to join.

3. Specifics

Bikers are all about brand loyalty. One of the important things that you’ll need to uncover during your research is whether you want to be a club that supports a specific type of bike. The other, more dominant clubs in your area (if there are any) will help inform this decision.

If you want to have everyone ride the same type of bike as you, then, by all means, restrict your club to riders of that specific brand. However, there are no rules governing this type of specificity, so you can allow whoever you want to join.

It should be noted that opening it up to bikes of all kinds will result in more riders into attempting to join your club. If you want to keep it more exclusive, then keep the focus narrow.

4. Come Up With a Name, and Symbol

Now the fun part begins. Coming up with your name is going to be one of the more crucial elements of starting your motorcycle club. So, what’s in a name?

You’ll want to choose a name that’s representative of your image, your philosophy, and your location, among other things. You can be pretty straightforward and name it something like “The blank County Motorcycle Club”, which gets a specific point across about what your club is.

Let your creativity take hold if you want, though. A name like “The Hartford Highwaymen” lets people know where you’re from and what you all love doing. Once you’ve got your name, you can move on to your mission statement and symbol.

5. The Mission Statement

You can use your mission statement to set yourself apart from the other motorcycle clubs in your region. It should make your values and intentions clear, so sit down and write down three things that you want your club to convey and craft them into a sentence that’ll become your mission statement.

6. Logo

Once you’ve got your name and mission statement down, create a distinctive logo to represent your club. It should have visual elements of what you’re trying to convey in your mission statement. 

There are lots of examples of great motorcycle club logos on the net, but you might want to commission an artist to take care of this part if you’re not artistically minded. Just tell them what you’re thinking and have them send you a couple of drafts to choose from.

7. Getting Initial Members

Recruiting your first members might be difficult if you don’t have a network of motorcycle riding friends. Trying finding local motorcycle enthusiasts groups online and send out a message to let people know that you’re starting a new club in the area for anyone interested.

When you know a lot of fellow bikers, you can draft a registration form to hand out or for potential members to pick up. Drop them off at repair shops and motorcycle dealerships to get some exposure.

If you’re having trouble getting members, put out an open invitation on social media, message boards, or a bulletin board where a lot of bikers might be. Eventually, some bikers will start heeding your call and you can officially start your club.

8. Creating Structure

Like any other organization, you’ll want to create structure within your motorcycle club. You don’t have to do this right away. It’s better reserved for when you get to know each person’s strengths and weaknesses.

If you’ve got a large group, you could name yourself the president, then hold a general election to fill the other positions. A typical club might have a president, a vice president, secretary, treasurer, a medic, a bylaw enforcer, a repair specialist, and a road captain.

The positions that you make available will depend on the size and organizational qualities of your group. It depends on how serious you want to get with it.

9. Find a Regular Meeting Place

Now that you’ve got all of the difficult parts over with, it’s time for you to find a regular meeting place for your club. When you’re first starting, it’s probably going to be someone’s house or the parking lot of a favorite restaurant or motorcycle shop.

As you grow, however, you might want to use membership fees to put towards a more permanent establishment. You can lease or rent warehouse space to hold get-togethers, talk about club matters, and choose routes for road trips.

10. Give Back

Unfortunately, there are negative stigmas associated with motorcycle clubs that are mostly unfounded in America. Subvert this assumption by actively participating in community engagement as much as possible.

You might even consider coordinating with the other motorcycle clubs in your area to organize and participate in fundraisers for the community to show them that you’re a lawful and respectful organization like any other.

Not everybody loves riding shoulder-to-shoulder or the deafening sound of hundreds of thousands of motorcycles. For bikers with crowd anxiety or who prefer more space to ride, smaller motorcycle rallies may be a better place to start.

This also goes for families who want to bring their youngsters along. Protective gear like sound-blocking earmuffs can do a world of good for kids attending big motorcycle rallies.

2. Hotels Book Up Fast

Because people come from out of town and even out of state to attend motorcycle rallies, finding a hotel room can be a little tricky. Even smaller rallies can attract enough attention that hotels end up fully booked for the week, especially if those rallies are held in small towns.

For bikers who want to squeeze in a rally or two before the year is over, it’s important to arrange plans now. Not only will it be harder to find a place to stay the closer it is to the rally’s starting date but hotels may start to drive up their prices as available rooms become more scarce. 

In the event that hotels are fully booked or way over budget, it may be worthwhile to look into nearby campgrounds. For example, there are tons of campgrounds located near Sturgis, South Dakota, that may be a more affordable option for out-of-towners. 3. Not Every Vendor Will Take Credit Cards

There are always tons of cool vendors and great pop-up shops selling motorcycle gear and merchandise. However, it’s not surprising to find some cash-only spots.

There may be some conveniently located ATMs around, but they may also come with not-so-convenient cash withdrawal fees. That $100 vest may not seem so appealing when a $50 withdrawal fee is tacked onto the expenses. Getting cash out from a bank or normally priced ATM at home can actually cut down on the amount spent at a motorcycle rally.

That being said, it’s not a bad idea to use a debit or credit card where they are accepted. Even for bikers on a budget, it’s best to save the cash for cash-only vendors. That way, they don’t end up splurging on high ATM fees when all their cash is gone but there’s one last cash-only vendor on their bucket list.

4. Some Rally Races Have Entry Fees

While many rallies have expanded their programs to include speakers, musicians, and more, the races are still a major attraction. Plenty of first-time rally goers may just want to watch, but some may be itching to ride. It’s good to know which races are free for everyone and which ones have entry fees so those fees can be built into the budget.

On that same note, bikers who have paid to enter a race don’t want to get caught up in all the traffic and end up missing the race. Getting an early start towards the racing grounds and camping out for a few hours may seem like a waste of precious rally time, but it’s better than watching from the sidelines because there’s no way to make it to the starting line on time.

And, of course, safety is key when it comes to racing. Bikers who want to participate in rally races should always make sure their bikes are in full working condition. They should also hold off on the booze until after the race is over.

5. There Might Be Some Big Musical Guests

Bikers who have never been to a motorcycle rally before may not be expecting to see a full-blown concert during their visit. However, as motorcycle rallies grow over the years, they can attract some pretty big names in music!

In the months leading up to the rally dates, most rallies will begin to release their lineup of scheduled events, including stage times for different musicians. Keeping up with this schedule will help attendants form a plan in advance so they know where to be and when.

If a rally happens to announce a musician a biker loves, they know to show up at the right stage early and get a good seat. They also might delve into the rich history of motorcycle culture or share their own personal stories of how they came to be part of motorcycle culture. Listening to a speech may seem like a lowkey way to spend time at a motorcycle rally, but those speakers can be life-changing and memorable.

7. Almost Everything is Outdoors

Bikers are used to being out on the open road in all elements, so this one may seem like a no-brainer. However, motorcycle rallies can last anywhere from two days to nearly two weeks, and that’s a lot of time sun time.

Chances are, vendors will be set up throughout the rally grounds with sunscreen and bottled water. However, they’ll probably be charging exorbitant prices for those kinds of necessities. 

Bikers should wear (and reapply) sunscreen every day of the rally and carry bottled water in their backpacks or saddlebags. Dehydration and sunburn can put a huge damper on rally spirits.

8. Vendors Will Start Lowering Prices Towards the End of the Rally

A lot of the vendors that post up at motorcycle rallies want to sell out of everything they bring. For that reason, a lot of them will start reducing their prices as the rally nears its end.

It can be risky for a biker to wait until the end of a rally to start buying the things they’ve had their eye on. If there’s something they really want, it may be best to go ahead and splurge. However, if there is merchandise they’re interested in but wouldn’t pay full price for, they should wait and see if the prices drop later on.

9. Safe Parking is a Must

For the most part, motorcycle rally attendants are there to celebrate their communal love of motorcycles. However, there’s always the chance that less savory characters will show up looking for opportunities to steal motorcycles.

Bikers should always park in designated rally parking lots. Ideally, these lots will have security that can keep an eye on things while bikers are on foot. Parking away from the rally grounds may be cheaper, but not cheap enough to make up for the costs of replacing a stolen motorcycle.

Located in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Daytona Bike Week bike rally lasts 10 days at the beginning of March every year. One of the most notable events for this bike rally is the Bike Week Motorcycle drawing. For the 2020 event, one person will win a Harley Davidson Dyna Glide motorcycle.

Myrtle Beach Bike Week

This rally offers 2 events every year, 1 in the spring and 1 in the fall. The spring event is at the beginning of May, while the fall event is at the end of September and into the beginning of October. 

The Myrtle Beach Bike Week focuses on a beautiful coastline ride of the Grand Strand of South Carolina. During the spring rally, an estimated 275,000 riders make their way through the area, while roughly 25,000 riders trek through for the fall rally.

Like many other bike rallies, this event offers lots in the way of attractions but also music events and food vendors. People travel from all over the country to visit this scenic rally, making sure they are prepped and ready for the long haul.

Laconia Motorcycle Week

With just 4 years until it’s 100th anniversary, Laconia Motorcycle Week in Laconia, New Hampshire is a definite fan favorite. The rally encompasses the 2nd and 3rd weeks of June during the New England springtime. Some events at the rally include memorial rides, live music, street food vendors, and stunt shows. 

The only downside of this rally is the unknown weather conditions. They mostly experience sunny bike rallies, but there have been years past where there was heavy rain.

Uniquely it’s own, this rally has a specialized publication that is released every February before the rally. This publication does offer up-to-date information on several other big-time rallies including Sturgis and Daytona Bike Week. Republic of Texas Biker Rally

The ROT Biker Rally, as it is commonly referred to, just finished its 24th year in June of 2019. This rally is a ticketed event, meaning attendees have to purchase a ticket in advance to attend. 

The rally takes place at an event center in Austin, Texas and attracts many distinguished motorcycle loving entertainers such as Willie Nelson, Joan Jett, and Sammy Hagar. Though many would argue that the most exciting piece of this rally is the bike giveaway.

Four Corners Motorcycle Rally

This bike rally is packed full of events in a single weekend at the beginning of September. Located in Durango, Colorado, their website boasts that riders can enjoy the best riding rally in the United States with a weekend full of bikes, live music, motorcycle giveaways, stunt shows, racing, bike shows, great food, drinks and more. 

Supporting very important charities and non-profits, this rally in collaboration with their many partners, focuses on bringing as much fun as possible into a weekend getaway for the rally goer that still has a full-time job commitment. 

Harley-Davidson stands behind this rally as a large time supporter, so riders can rest assured that this is a rally they don’t want to miss!

Bikes, Blues, & BBQ

This bike rally, dubbed “A Rally with a Purpose” is the largest charity rally in the United States. Located in the Ozark mountains, BB&BBQ brings hundreds of thousands of people to Fayetteville, AR every September. 

Like many of the other bike rallies listed, this one provides many events to cater to everyone. Stunt shows, live music, a BBQ contest, and a car and bike show among other things. This rally is free to attend, but specialty tickets can be purchased for more in-depth experiences. 

If riders are looking for more to do besides the rally, there are many local Arkansas State parks nearby, as well as Historic Districts including the Walmart Museum in Bentonville, the home town of Walmart. 

Rolling Thunder

This rally is a memorial ride through Washington D.C. to remember and honor those who gave everything for this country during the Vietnam war. Though since its inception, the rally has evolved to honor all servicemen and women who have or currently are serving. 

The Rolling Thunder rally is a self-proclaimed protest to demonstrate the grief of having a loved one Missing In Action or killed as a Prisoner Of War. 

Rolling Thunder really highlights POW’s and MIA’s that they consider having been abandoned after the Vietnam War ceased. For more information on this topic, their website provides ample details. 

This emotional demonstration charity ride hosts upwards of 1 million riders and spectators combined in the largest single-day bike rally in the country. This is definitely a “Do Not Miss” item on many riders’ bucket lists. 

Bama Bike Fest

Unlike any other bike rally listed, the Bama Bike Fest is an adult-only rally that requires attendees to be 21 years of age or older. This event happens 3 times a year for 4 days each time. 

Located in Forkland, Alabama, this is the adult biker party all riders have dreamt of. This event does require a purchased ticket or armband, but they do offer some free amenities if riders stay on property. 

Each night there is a theme and special contests, including a chaps contest, Halloween costume contest, and motorcycle rodeo. The Bama Bike Fest is all about adult fun in a pasture party package!

5. Buffalo Chip

Do you want to enjoy music and other forms of entertainment during your stay in Sturgis? If so, then you should save an evening for a visit to the Buffalo Chip Campground so that you can check out live performances in different forms.

While the next exhibit we are able to talk about is part of Buffalo Chip, the “Motorcycles of Art” exhibit stands on its own. This is because it showcases the work of photographer Michael Lichter and his appreciation for bikes.

The photos consist of old bikes from the biggest names in the bike world that have inspired the models that are getting attention today. The artwork and memorabilia come with a specific theme each year.

7. Bear Butte

Visiting Sturgis will take you a little further away from civilization, but you can use this as a chance to get fresh air in nature. One way to do that is with a hike up Bear Buttle, a mountain that gave the state park its name.

You can take your bike out to the park if you still want to see how your motorcycle performs on long roads in the outdoors. Make sure that you practice hiking before you get to Sturgis so that you are used to long walks and heights.

9. Iron Horse Saloon

One of the most popular activities in Sturgis is touring through the saloons to try different drinks. One of the spots that you need to take your bike to is the Iron Horse Saloon, which is built to join your photo collection, as well.

This is an activity that we recommend to those visiting with their adult friends so that they can enjoy tough liquor with no worries. Schedule a dinner at this saloon so that you can enjoy fried food and cold beers.

Ride for Kids

Since 1984 that fun meets generosity at the national event Ride for Kids.

You can register online to ride at your local event, on routes that typically go for 40 to 50 miles. Even those who don’t bike can get involved, by volunteering, planning a fundraiser and more.

The $40 you pay are worth the registration, as well an official t-shirt, a ride pin, and food. That money, alongside other donations, goes to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, an organization that helps children with brain tumors.

Besides that, the money that’s raised also helps fund the education of young people who survived a brain tumor.

42nd National Bikers Roundup

The National Bikers Roundup is organized by African American motorcycle clubs and it has become the biggest camping bike rally in America.

In 1977, the first year of the event, 49 riders attended. Now, as a 5-day long event, it receives around 30,000 riders every year (and nearly 50% are black women).

At the event, you can see exhibitions, stunt shows, drag racing, parades and more. The location of the event changes every year, but the 42nd edition will be in Mississippi.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2019

2019 is “The Year of the Ride” for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, so there will be at least 6 different rides for everyone to try.

41st Annual Wing Ding 2019

At Wing Ding, bikers can suggest their favorite rides around Nashville, where participants are sure to find “the most beautiful scenery and best restaurants”.

One of the biggest trade shows organized for Gold Wing and Touring riders in the world happens at Wing Ding. There you can take part in demo rides and see the work of several apparel designers and custom artisans. If you’re looking for new gear for your rides, this is definitely a good place to buy it.

Plus, there’s a kickoff party to start the event on the right foot, GWRRA recruiting booths, old-fashion bike games, a bike night with music and a light show, and more.

2019 Roar to the Shore

Where? Wildwood, New Jersey

The Roar to the Shore stands out from bike events we’ve mentioned so far for two big reasons: its location, in such a central city, and the fact that you don’t have to pay to participate.

So even if you’re on a budget, there’s an authentic motorcycle bike you can take part in!

At 2019 Roar to the Shore there’s a Rubber Duck Ride around the Cape May County. This part of the event includes a raffle where you can win a mystery prize. Although there’s a price to participate (1 ticket for $15 or 2 for $25), the money is donated to charity organizations in the Wildwoods.

Capital City Bikefest – 15th Annual

Where? Raleigh Convention Center, Downtown Raleigh

The Capital City Bikfest is a 3-day family-friendly event.

The program includes a bike show, stunt shows, rides, a car show (which you can apply for by sending a photo and build specs of your car), a motorcycle rally for the entire family and live music.

There’s also a tattoo fest within this motorcycle festival. In order to get inked at the event, you must schedule an appointment with the artist of your choice. Once again, the proceeds go to charity, in this case to the USO of NC and the US Veteran’s Corps.

19th Annual Thunder Beach Autumn Rally

Where? Panama City Beach, Florida

Thunder Beach organizes two annual bike events, on during the Spring and the other during Autumn.

At this rally, there are free concerts, Miss and Ms. Thunder Beach contests, poker runs supported by charities and a welcoming party on the first day.

This is another free rally, although the organization encourages participants to buy merch and shop at their official vendor villages. This way, they are able to keep the event free for years to come.

Lone Star Rally

Where? Galveston, Texas

When? October 31, 2019, until November 3, 2019

• $99 for Platinum VIP (all weekend)
• $75 for Gold VIP (all weekend)
• $50 for single day VIP ticket

The Lone Star Rally organizes a bike show where the winner gets $500 and a full feature in the Cycle Source Magazine. Besides that, you can take part in Rodeo Games and win the 2019 Rodeo Championship Belt, or in the Perewitz Pain Show and win custom painted prizes.

But this event is about more than bikes: you can see both a drive-in car show and a truck and jeep show.

Additionally, the rally holds the Miss Lone Star Rally contest, where the winner receives $10,000 in cash.

Roscoes Chili Challenge 2019

This one is for those of you who love chili just as much as you love riding bikes.

The main attraction at this event are the cookoff and the chili challenge – hence the name – that’s been going on for over 30 years and where the winner can get $2000. But there’s also a lot of events for bikers: a bike show sponsored by Born to Ride, a Slow Ride and mini-bike races.

Like many others, the Roscoes Chili Challenge raises money for charity: all the money you spend on beer is donated to the Polk County Christmas Angels.

Progressive International Motorcycle Show – New York
