How to Ship a Motorcycle?

June 13, 2022 By Alen Schnell Leave a Comment

We are being compensated by or have an ownership interest in one or more of the parties mentioned or linked to on this page. To ensure transparency, we also have a page where you can learn about how we make money.

There are several reasons you might need to ship a motorcycle, such as buying or selling one to someone far away, finding your dream bike in another state, or attending a motorcycle event or rally.

Regardless of the reason, you have multiple options for safe, reliable, and cost-effective long-distance motorcycle transportation.

Let’s look at 5 popular methods of shipping motorcycles:

1. Online Transporation Marketplaces

Online marketplaces connect shippers of large, bulky items with freight and vehicle transportation providers, many of whom specialize in handling motorcycles. These platforms allow you to obtain multiple quotes, compare providers based on ratings and reviews, and choose the best fit for your needs.

We recommend uShip, an online marketplace we’ve had positive experiences with. Other popular options include Shiply and CitizenShipper. When using an online marketplace, be sure to verify the provider’s credentials and insurance coverage.

2. Motorcycle Shipping Companies

There are various shipping companies that focus on motorcycle transportation. These companies often have specialized equipment and trained staff to ensure your motorcycle arrives in perfect condition.

For instance, HaulBikes provides one-way shipping at a flat rate of $600 to most of the United States. They also frequently offer special pricing for round-trip shipping to events like Sturgis and Biketoberfest. Other reputable companies include Federal Motorcycle Transport and Motorcycle Shippers.

When choosing a shipping company, be sure to inquire about the total price, estimated delivery date, insurance coverage, and how they ensure the motorcycle’s safety during transit. It’s also a good idea to read customer reviews to get a sense of their reputation and reliability.

3. Pickup Truck or Trailer

If you or a friend owns a pickup truck or a trailer, you can likely transport the bike yourself. All you need is a loading ramp, some tie-downs, and possibly a wheel chock to keep the front wheel in place.

We recommend using a ramp designed specifically for motorcycles, such as the folding aluminum arched motorcycle ramp from Rage Powersports. Additionally, invest in heavy-duty tie-down straps that can handle the weight of a motorcycle. Look for products specifically designed for motorcycles, like Ohuhu’s four-pack of 15-foot, 1,500 lb straps, available for $19 with one-day shipping if you have Amazon Prime.

4. Motorcycle Towing Services

Some towing companies offer specialized motorcycle towing services, which can be a viable option for shorter distances. These services use modified tow trucks or flatbeds to securely transport your motorcycle without causing damage. Be sure to confirm that the towing company has experience handling motorcycles and carries adequate insurance coverage.

5. Crated Shipping

Crated shipping involves placing your motorcycle in a wooden or metal crate and shipping it via a freight carrier. This method offers added protection for your bike, as it is fully enclosed and secured within the crate. However, crated shipping may require additional preparation, such as draining fluids and removing the battery, and may be more expensive than other options.

Ship a Motorcycle

Shipping a motorcycle doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By exploring these options and researching providers, you can find the most suitable and cost-effective solution for your needs.

Remember to document the condition of your motorcycle before shipping and inspect it upon arrival to ensure a smooth and successful experience.

If you’ve successfully used another method in the past or have suggestions, please share your experiences in the comments below.
